Thames Water has written to residents of Barking and Dagenham residents to inform them of plans to upgrade the Beckon Sewage Treatment works.
The sewage plant on Jenkins Lane takes away around 4.4 billion litres of wastewater from 15 million people in and around the borough, a figure roughly enough to fill Wembley stadium four times over.
Now Thames Water wants to ensure that the site is able to cope with the ever-growing population by upgrading much of the equipment used at the site.
The development overseen by Britain’s largest water group will see an increase to the treatment capacity at the Jenkins Lane site, specifically the activated sludge process and final settlement tanks to be able to process more wastewater in the future.
There will also be investment in new equipment to upgrade the inlet works, which is the equipment used to help remove solids, grit and other debris from the wastewater.
In April, Thames Water held a drop in evening at the Beckton Community Centre where residents were able to give feedback on the plans ahead of the application submission.
The plan is for the work to be completed entirely within the existing site from spring 2020 with a planning application due to be submitted to the London Borough of Newham in July this year.
