Coronavirus pandemic changes brits’ vision of “perfect home”

The coronavirus pandemic has made Brits reconsider what they want from their “dream home”, a new study has revealed.

The research, published by Skipton Building Society, explores how the Covid-19 lockdown has changed the views of British homeowners and what they would demand from their next home.

According to the poll of 2,000 adults, six in 10 plan to move this year as a result of “changing priorities”, with a quarter of these changing their vision of the “perfect house” following the three months spent in lockdown. One in four are willing to “spend more money” to find and live in their dream property.

When asked about their new wants and needs, over half (52 per cent) of homeowners said they want a life in the countryside, while a similar number are looking for a garden or outdoor space that is larger than the one they currently have. A third of participants also want space to “grow plants and fruit and vegetables”.

And with remote working in full swing, a quarter of British homeowners now also demand space for a home office.

A third of respondents, meanwhile, want to move into a home with a bigger kitchen or garage to practice new-found hobbies.

Commenting on the survey, Alex Beavis, Skipton’s Head of Mortgages, said: “With the nation having spent so much time indoors lately people have had the opportunity and time to decide whether their home is really giving them everything that they want and need – as well as highlighting features that are missing from their current home.

“Usually when people look to move it’s because of space. They either want more of it, less of it, or they want their own space after a relationship breakdown or flying the nest. The lockdown has really given us all time to hone in on exactly what we want from our living arrangements and what our top priorities are if we were to move.”
