Building work begins on river roding development

Building work has officially started on a brand new £300 million development in the Barking and Dagenham region.

The development known as Fresh Wharf will be built on a brownfield site that runs alongside the River Roding and will see around 10 acres of land turned into around 900 new homes as well as shops, cafes, businesses and parks.

Demolition of the old site started in February this year and earlier this week a ground-breaking ceremony took place as builders took the first steps towards construction of the new development.

The full development is expected to be completed by 2026, but the first batch 532 homes are expected to be completed by Autumn 2020 with homes available to buy from January.

Council leader Darren Rodwell and Deputy Leader Councillor Saima Ashraf, deputy leader, were joined by representatives from developers Countryside and Notting Hill Genesis at the ceremony.

London Borough of Barking and Dagenham councillor Darren Rodwell said: “This is great news, it’s another sign that Barking and Dagenham is booming.

“The River Roding is one of east London’s unsung waterways. This new development will help us revitalise the river and create one of London’s most vibrant waterside communities a kind of Roding Riviera for ordinary Londoners.”
